Parquet in Asian Teak

Features, advantages and maintenance advice
Asian Teak flooring: origin of this wood type
“Tectona” is a family of tropical trees with a very hard wood – it includes three species commonly known as Teak or teck, typical of tropical and subtropical forests in South and South-eastern Asia. Their trunks are large, straight and cylindric and it can grow up to 30-40 metres in height, with diameter up to 1,5 mt. Before being cut, the plant is subjected to the removal of a ring of bark at the base of the trunk (a point where the diameter can even reach 10 meters) - in this way the plant releases moisture and natural dyes and the wood takes on its typical shades. This wood has a colour that goes from pale yellow to bronze and sometimes tends to red; it contains a natural oily resin which makes it extremely resistant.

Its main characteristics are the remarkable hardness, the dimensional stability, the resistance to moisture and, last but not least, its beauty. It can stand temperature variations, humidity, salt and atmospheric agents, all factors that hit hard other kinds of parquet. These characteristics, together with its great hardness, make it one of the most durable woods ever. A distinctive feature of teak, which make it different to any other wood, is that it contains a particular oily resin – it is actually known as a “greasy wood”. This resin gives it incredible resilience, protecting it from moisture and liquids, from sudden changes in temperature and from the wearing action of fungi and wood parasites. Asia teak arrived in Europe already at the beginning of the 19th century, when thanks to its exceptional qualities it was employed in the naval industry. In fact, thanks to its remarkable resistance to bad weather, teak is frequently used in the construction of ship decks without requiring any protective treatment. Another very important characteristic is that it does not alter in contact with screws or hardware in general. It contains an appreciable percentage of silica and is refractory to impregnation, even in an autoclave. All these elements contribute to making teak parquet one of the finest on the market. The colour of Asian Teak parquet and its appearance greatly depend on the origin of the wood – the area, the climate, the exposure, all affect the characteristics of the wood, making it original and inimitable. Usually, its grain is straight, with fine texture and irregular and marked veins. To the touch and the sight it appears oily and with a characteristic smell of leather. The colour nuances can go from dark shades tending to black or red to the light yellow and whitish colour of the sapwood. However, the colour tends to get uniform over time due to oxidation (the reaction of the parquet to exposure to light) and to become golden-brown. The shades of the teak parquet allow to give a particular character to surfaces, creating bright and at the same time intimate and comfortable spaces.

Choosing an Asia Teak parquet means combining functionality and aesthetics. Extremely resistant, it adapts perfectly to any environment, illuminating spaces and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The mix of light and dark shades is its most remarkable feature – it confers dynamism to any surface, giving life to intimate and exclusive contexts. The porosity and the content of oily resin make the parquet in Asian Teak water-repellent, immune to parasites, resistant to thermal variations and atmospheric agents, without further treatments. It is resistant to bending and shocks, avoiding the risk of any deformation. As outdoor decking, teak represents the perfect combination of beauty and practicality – its resistance to water, humidity, weather agents and attacks from mold and insects are a guarantee of stability and durability. Precious and elegant, Asian Teak parquet bestows beauty on any architecture, making it sophisticated and refined.

It is the perfect parquet for those who want a floor that can last over time, even in rooms with a high level of humidity such as bathrooms and the kitchens, or for those who want to cover outdoor spaces with a robust and natural material – teak is perfect for borders of swimming pools, terraces, patios and gardens. Minimally invasive in a natural context, it can be used with a smooth surface or with an exposed face with anti-slip knurling, for example for the pools borders or on the most exposed balconies. It is an excellent wood, employed in many fields, from construction to the production of the most disparate objects. It can be found in ships or in objects that must be in close contact with water. Asia teak is a precious wood type, renowned both for its aesthetic and for its mechanical and physical characteristics. For these reasons, it is perfect for a wide range of uses, from naval industry to furnishings, from construction to external and interior flooring. Thanks to its characteristics and exceptional resistance, this type of parquet is also ideal in humid indoor environments such as the bathroom, because its oily resin content makes it resistant to water and thermal excursions. Thanks to these characteristics of beauty, durability, resistance and ductility, teak is an excellent wood for the most diverse applications such as parquet, buildings, furniture, interiors, but also decks and external claddings. Last but not least, we can say that teak is a wood that allows the creation of gorgeous parquets even in critical conditions, such as in presence of underfloor heating or in bathrooms and kitchens.

It is interesting to know that the density and composition of the Asian Teak parquet is not uniform and that among the fibres the wood can be softer; therefore, it is good practice, when brushing the teak, to work not in the direction of the grain, but at 90° with respect to them. Maintenance and cleaning of a Teak parquet are very simple and fast. As far as interiors are concerned, some small daily tricks will help to preserve its beauty over time. Ordinary cleaning of the parquet is very simple – it will be sufficient to periodically remove the dust with an antistatic cloth or with a vacuum cleaner with soft bristles and then clean the surface with a damp cloth soaked in water and neutral detergent. In rooms more subject to humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, it will be essential to avoid stagnant water on the floor and ventilate the rooms well after a shower or cooking with large amounts of steam to bring the values of moisture back to normal. As for outdoor decking, if treated properly Asian Teak does not require particular care. It can be washed with a brush and occasionally with specific products to restore shine. Avoid direct contact with barbecues and objects that are too hot so as to avoid damages to the surface.
